Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Attack as Police Press On With Hunt for Killer.
Two students who died in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their assailant continued following the freeing by authorities in Rhode Island of the sole person of interest in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was remembered as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.
Her role included vice-president of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared condolences on social media, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Remembering her loved ones and companions, above all her mom and dad.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the renowned school, according to relatives.
Umurzokov’s identity was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a memorial statement.
Details of the Attack
An additional nine individuals were injured in Saturday’s attack in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a man aged 24 detained in a search at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.
He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”
Ongoing Concerns
The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our city”.
The gunman began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering facility on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a authority informed the news agency.
Law enforcement that searched the lodging found two firearms and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was arrested, as was reported.
Those Hurt

An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a tribute. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and peers and lament the passing of his promising future.”
